As is the case with many older homes, the layout of the house did not meet contemporary needs. The kitchen was cramped and separated from the living areas and the main house had only one oversized bathroom. The lower floor had been converted into an in-law unit with a nearly unusable bathroom and kitchen.
The first order of business was to strategically rethink the floor plan without incurring major structural work or cost. To increase the kitchen size and its connectivity with the rest of the house, the entry hall closet and part of the powder room were merged with the kitchen. A new large arched opening to match the existing arch between the living and dining rooms was added between the kitchen and dining room. At the top floor the oversized bathroom was converted into two baths, one of which is en-suite to the primary bedroom. The material palette throughout the main house is quiet and muted to reflect the owner’s sophisticated taste.
The Accessory Dwelling Unit was remodeled with economy in mind. The door into the bedroom was shifted allowing the kitchen floor plan to be reconfigured and enlarged. The existing cramped bathroom was expanded into the unused storage area.
